BENEFITS

Astaxanthin is a promising compound in the field of dermatology. It inhibits collagenases, MMP activity, inflammatory mediators, and ROS induction, resulting in potent antiwrinkle and antioxidant effects.

Moreover, astaxanthin may prevent UV-induced immunosuppression. Toxicological aspects have been characterized and astaxanthin appears to be a safe and bioavailable compound.

CLINICAL STUDIES AND RESEARCH

Oxidative stress plays a critical role in skin aging and damage. The mechanisms of aging include oxidative metabolism and exposure to sun UV light. Oxidant events of skin aging involve damage to DNA, inflammatory response, reduced production of antioxidants, and generation of matrix metalloproteinases that degrade collagen and elastin in the skin.
